This is a great DIY project for anyone who wants to start blacksmithing on the cheap.This is an inexpensive tabletop forge out of a soup can (any can really) with a plaster lining.The propane torch acts as the fuel source, allowing the forge to heat steel plenty hot.

It’s really not that hard to create your own micro force for melting small amounts of metal for casting, knife forging, and the like.

The forge runs off of a common propane torch (spiral flame will work better than pencil flame) that can be bought at any hardware store. The question has been asked about what sand can be used. Any sand.
