As a migrant minority, the Miao people historically used silver as a method to carry their wealth. Today, it is considered a good luck charm and a symbol of high status.

Parents begin to collect pieces of silver for their daughters from the moment they are born. On their wedding day, Miao women wear incredible headdresses, accessories and clothing handmade with silver.

Silver accessories are a standard for the Miao people. For more than 400 years, it’s been the custom to decorate oneself head to toe, with silver. A full set can weigh up to ten kilograms. The Miao people also believe silver jewelry wards off evil spirits and can purge of the body of toxins.
