Heron’s fountain is a hydraulic machine invented by the 1st century AD inventor, mathematician, and physicist Heron of Alexandria.Heron’s fountain is a great project for a science fair, as it is simple to make and displays many of the basic principles of physics.

We are going to be making Heron’s fountain out of common household materials. For this experiment i used 3 empty bottles, 7 straws, hot glue gun, drilling machine, pen ink and some water. Wath the video by MrX for more info.

This project shows how potential energy can provide power, using water and gravity, and air and compression.

These are fundamental aspects of pneumatics and hydraulics and Heron’s fountain also lets you have a bit of fun during the process. This is a really easy build and would be a perfect project for to build with your kids. Maybe you could even sneak in a lesson on fluid dynamics or perpetual motion?
